There is a catastrophe going on, and no one's paying attention. We are running out of originals. Of everything. We now officially live in a world where everything we own, wear, see, hear or think, has been picked up, at some point, from a shopping mall of sorts. One of a thousand similar items for sale.
When was the last time you heard a truly new thought or idea? Or a song that doesn't remotely remind you of others you've heard? Of movies, i'd ask if you've seen one lately that didn't turn out to be the copy of some obscure Korean or Spanish flick.
The entertainment world is facing the problem that virtually every form of art (thats worth knowing), will eventually face.. How to deal with the Rip-offs?
I heard this story of one scriptwriter, who once approached a top Bollywood producer with some new movie idea; he was laughed at, given a stack of old English classics, told to go through them and come up with a Hindi Version. And the title, of course, would be the name of some old Bollywood song. Or if they've run out of those, a new Bollywood song. And after that, random English words like Footpath, Raincoat, Welcome... Somebody shoot me. Or help me shoot them.
The sad thing is, its become so rampant that its starting to seem reasonable.
Its not just the electronic media thats plagued by this epidemic. The London Eye is set to have an Indian twin. Maybe they'll call it the Mumbai Ankh. I dont object to two countries progressing on the same lines, but works of art and creativity are reflections of individuality, apart from progress. To blatantly copy such a thing would be the ultimate admission of a lack of any individuality whatsoever.
The war between the Creators and the Predators has been immortalized in Ayn Rand's 'Fountainhead'. Anyone who's read it will remember the feeling of disgust towards those who are unable to create anything by themselves, but will 'mooch' off those who can. Here's the real truth. There are very few aspects of our lives that we cannot trace to some external source. That doesn't really mean we're mooching, but it does mean we're being influenced far more than we know, even in our personality and thoughts.
The important thing, according to me, is to recognize which parts of you are truly yours. Because thats where your originality lies, at the core. Somewhere between all the defenses and pretenses (known and unknown), there is you.. a creator of original thought. Those are the thoughts you need to hear, for they're the ones that basically define you. They're there somewhere, in the midst of all the junk in your brain.

2 things you have to read/watch before you spout such inconspicuous shit again -
1. everything is a remix
2. read about nihilism and Nietzsche views on it.
who cares of about individuality or creativity .. its all a farce to conive yourself of some self-worth/importance of which none matter. :P
Haha.. Arjun the bored vigilant. I know of nihilism and Friedrich Nietzche's philosophy on it. I also know its a form of schizophrenia, and leads to suicidal cases.
'Inconspicuous shit' are those without creativity, those who'll never stand apart. You matter to no one in this world but yourself, thats true; but isnt that what counts.
peace out, u psycho :P
I like that phrase-" a creator of original thought". It reminds me of something Ayn Rand would say. The entertainment business has almost no hope left in it, except for 'a few good men';-). I think that the rest of the artists still stand a chance though, and will continue to create unique things, mainly because they are not looking to entertain the masses. A true artist creates because he has to. Period.
baah, just cause the average human cant accept the fact there is no meaning to it all , doesn't mean one who has accepted the fact is schizophrenic, one can delude one self in believing the is some deep hidden meaning to it all; of the greater purpose of it all, but the fact remains the is no purpose to it all, you do what you do and the outcome remains what it is. Read about Plato's Dialogues .. highly enlightening! Your perception of the world doesn't change the reality of it :D
btw it's vigilante .. not vigilant >.< spot the difference ...
oh and while we are on this search for the etymology of the word schizophrenia its skhizein-phren the splitting of the mind , also taken as the phren also means idea .. splitting of ideas from mainstream thoughts. :P
In the ultimate long-term, the outcome is fixed, i agree.. but assume for a moment u're more selfish than that, and u do care what happens to u now, in your short - term life. then everything u do or say, every small decision u make has some ripple effect on everything else.
actually, your perception of the world is the reality of it. and when you die, your world dies, as far as you're concerned. u use the term reality assuming there is an unbiased point of view, which can never exist.
i like your take on schizophrenics :P
@ Smriti.. I absolutely agree that artists create because thats the only outlet they have to express their thoughts.
As for the entertainment business, unfortunately, all the hopelessness suits them fine. They're counting on our rapidly falling standards of expectations to survive.
I see this is a rip-off of one of our conversations.
What an awesome post.. I too believe in originality and individuality when it comes to ideas...
And regarding the entertainment side, ure correct they lower their standards because we are ready to lower ours...
But one question, isnt it our fault too? Its our hectic fast moving life tht makes us accept any crap given to us...
We know Junk food isnt good for us, but we accept it because we have no time to cook ourselves good food...
Who the heck in the world these days sets aside time to think what their life actually means, to think of new creative ideas... Every brain is getting rusted...
Its the thirst of money, fame, comfort in simple words its the greed in life that has taken this capability from us, to think creative..
In olden days songs were never composed meaningless because ppl who were born poets chose that path.. Today almost everyone chooses to be a doc or engg.. why again? Money factor!! Robert Frost's poem- A road not taken expresses that view...
I guess its the change in the priority of people that has created this effect, not wanting to think creative and out of the box..
@ Imba God.. Considering the scope of the conversations we've had, the only topics untouched are the ones not worth touching.. :P
Good times.. :D
ah there in lies in the conundrum of life , is life the delusional view you have of the world or the one where you play a small part in the big picture, what you choose is the one convenient to you, can you live the lie ; that is your delusion to gain some happiness or accept the truth and the misery that comes with it. cause truth of the world is the scariest thing and people build walls of faith, love, relations ,indifference just to protect themselves from it ,does it make it go away. no
A nice article and so very true. But now I share some food for thought..........Is there any original idea or thought? and who is the one who claims to have any original idea or thought.......
Have a nice day.
Hi Namita.. thanks for sharing your thoughts. It is admittedly a controversial topic, but the way I see it is that, if you have created something, anything, in your life, where previously nothing existed, then you've created something original. It doesn't matter if the ingredients weren't original, because nobody else thought of using them the way you did.
Basically your creation should reflect you, whether it is an article, a painting or just an idea.
Do keep sharing..
And you have a nice day too :)
