Limbic Love

Our limbic system had a complaint to make.
Every other system in the body would take
All the credit for running the show,
And seemed no one even wanted to know
What the limbic system is or does,
Or how important it is to us.
So getting all emotional (as is the limbic way)
The limbic system went on strike one day.

And noone noticed. It was a busy time of year
With membranes to make and metabolites to clear.
The heart, pumped up as usual, didn't miss a beat.
The ass, like an ass, didn't even get up from its seat.
The liver was too busy living, to be of much use.
The stomach was too full to digest the news.
The lungs wanted to smoke, they'd stepped out for air.
And the kidneys, well, they were too stoned to care.

The cerebral cortex, as always, trying to make sense
Of every action, its purpose, and its consequence,
Was so caught up, it took a long while
Before it realized it had forgotten to smile.
The eyes could only watch as memories were made,
But not felt, and eventually, began to fade.
The ears overheard things like excitement and humour,
But dismissed it all as just passing rumours.

Then love happened - and something changed
Sympathetically placed jigsaw pieces got rearranged,
Thoughts started racing, they would not wait
For logical explanations that now seemed inadequate.
The body panicked; the cortex tried its best
To calm down a heart thumping frantic in the chest;
To reason with a stomach full of butterflies now,
With lungs trying to breathe but forgotten how.

Yet nothing was working. The mind confessed -
I'm losing myself with all this suppressed
Emotions. So finally, everyone pleaded
With the limbic system to come back where its needed.
And come back it did, with a swirl and some flair
Because Limbic - does everything with a theatrical air.
So love found its purpose, other emotions too;
And a famous poem was written to give Limbic its due.
