once upon a time
in a small country town
there lived a crow in a tree
near the school playground.
though hundreds of others
could be both seen and heard
there was something different
about this particular bird.
he kept no family
he lived alone in his nest
no responsibilities
or burdens on his chest.
the other birds wondered
is he a hermit of some kind
surely he must carry
a lot on his mind
one by one, they came
sought help and advice.
not knowing they'd mistaken
a lunatic for wise.
he answered all questions
he had nothing to lose
he spoke what he thought
left it to them to choose.
he was provided with comfort
and company and food
the lesser he reached out
the more they felt they should.
but finally, fortunes turned
and luck ran out
now all questions were shrouded
in cynicism and doubt.
they started to grumble
and suspect and complain
they pointed their fingers
and started to blame.
they asked for compensation
for the damages he'd caused
they followed what he said
and now everything was lost.
they threatened to barricade
and banish, even burn
if he didnt respect
and resolve their concerns.
"now wait a minute.
this cant be right",said the crow.
"how can i be punished
for what i didnt know?
ignorance is shameful
but certainly no crime.
i am being persecuted
through no fault of mine.
i shall appeal to the law
reason to its sense
i'l ensure that the clueless
is never mistreated hence."
The crow flew to the courts
and before them, placed,
and argued and fought
and pleaded his case.
the judges listened;
pondered what they heard.
they thought and debated
and then reconsidered.
finally they came
to a conclusion and said,
"a life's responsibility
lies in its own head.
morals and laws are
but self-designed
they only serve to
forcibly remind
that in moderation
lies the key to peace
its against your own good
to do anything you please.
the crow was a fool
to blurt out what he thought
but not as foolish as those
who listened to its rot.
if incomplete knowledge
shows a lazy will,
those who follow such gospel
are lazier still.
Laziness, we know
is an inconvenient friend.
it curries favors
that aren't needed then.
let it be understood
from now on hence
that ignorance of ignorance
is no self defense."
the birds flew back
to their lives and nests
and never again questioned
that instinct is best.
